What is Health Psychology?

Health Psychology is well established in Australian hospital settings, but Health Psychologists are perhaps less well-known in the private practice space.

The title ‘Health Psychologist’ means that the psychologist has an extended scope of practice in the area of Health Psychology and has completed an additional qualification that is approved by the Psychologist Board of Australia.

The Australian Psychological Society describes the work of Health Psychologists as:

“... we are trained to promote positive behaviours to reduce risk factors for poor health. In this field, we are dedicated to understanding and helping to modify attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that contribute to poor health outcomes… Health psychologists also help people recover from, or self-manage, trauma, chronic pain, or a disability. We also help clients to manage contributory issues such as anxiety or emotional reactions like anger and grief.”

Similarly, the British Psychological Society states on its website:

“The goal of health psychology is to study the psychological processes underlying health, illness and health care, and to apply these findings to the promotion and maintenance of health, the analysis and improvement of the health care system and health policy formation, the prevention of illness and disability, and the enhancement of outcomes for those who are ill or disabled.”
